Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is confident it’ll be solved – and – Manchester United are calm – but the point at which David de Gea is totally free to perpetrate his future everywhere is drawing nearer.
The failure to declare a new contract for its goalkeeper, with whom United are negotiating for more than two years, is currently creating unease among the club’s help.
There are a few twists in the tale of De Gea’s future over the 2 decades. It seemed he was dedicated to remain; at another, it seemed he’d resolved to leave.
However in July, after United made their most recent offer, the atmosphere from the team and the participant camp was one of confidence. A strong belief was that discussions would be concluded following the final tour of Australia and Asia.
There is still no official confirmation of a deal Fourteen days after United returned to Manchester. On 1 January, De Gea – authorized by Atletico Madrid for #18.9m in 2011 – would probably be free to sign pre-contract terms with any club out England.
“I’m pretty confident we’ll find that sorted,” explained Solskjaer.
“David hasn’t , ever said to me something other than that he loves the team has had a great time and wishes to remain. So let’s just hope we put it done on the line.”
His awards can measure the worth to Manchester United of de Gea. The goalkeeper won the Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year award four times in five seasons between 2014 and 2018.
He could have lost his position in the Spain team to Chelsea’s Kepa Arrizabalaga, but De Gea remains one of the few truly world-class players.
Any replacement would certainly reflect a regression, even though Solskjaer feels he has adequate cover if the goalkeeper were to leave. Currently, the director has Argentina Lee Grant as his option, Sergio Romero as choice, along with the England Under-21 keeper Dean Henderson, who is out on loan.
“I have two very good backup keepers here and Dean is at Sheffield United,” Solskjaer stated. “Overall, the goalkeeping department is in great health.”
United had won the Premier League and chose a third Champions League appearance in four seasons, dropping at Wembley when De Gea came at Old Trafford.
The slip since than has been significant.
After the unsuccessful tenures of both David Moyes, Louis van Gaal and Jose Mourinho, Solskjaer has been brought into reconnect the club into its glorious past.
Solskjaer says that he still views United as”the largest and greatest club on the planet”. Yet there is a difference between the reality and that opinion.
On Saturday, United host a Leicester side that are above them in the table. The traffic, look well set to struggle for a top-four location and under the management of all both Brendan Rodgers, do not have the distraction of a European effort.
United are already finding it much more difficult to draw star names than they ever did during Sir Alex Ferguson’s time. The loss of De Gea – to Paris St-Germain, Juventus or any other club would be a blow to their stature.
For now, that is something Solskjaer is unwilling to contemplate.
Asked if maintaining De Gea would be an announcement, the Norwegian explained:”Yes, undoubtedly.
“We got used to getting the very best keepers here: [Peter] Schmeichel, [Edwin] Van der Sar, De Gea. We want the ones that are best. We wish to construct a winning team again, to battle for the biggest trophies.”
